Happy Christmas, Merry Hanukkah, Kwanzaa Greetings…

Posted By AmyD. on December 16, 2005

I’m NOT going to weigh in on this stuff. Just not going to do it.

Ok, maybe just a little bit.

It’s Christmas so I’m saying Merry Christmas… Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas!

I read a blog post the other day that said that all of our nation’s recognized holidays were Christian holidays.

Not true…

What about 4th of July?

Memorial Day?

President’s Day?

Veteran’s Day?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day?

Look, most of you who know me know that I am not a religious person… I’m more into spirituality, but that’s another post, I suppose.

I have no problem wishing someone a Happy Hanukkah… but the fact is, I don’t have any friends or family who are Jewish… if I did… I’d certainly send them a card or something. Geez.

Kwanzaa… same thing, I don’t know anyone who celebrates it.

But, if you happen to celebrate either one of these holidays…

Happy Hannukah!

Happy Kwanzaa!

Now, I also have no problem wishing someone “Happy Holidays” or “Season’s Greetings” to me it is and always has been just another way to wish someone all of the Season’s best… because regardless of which holiday you celebrate, this is a wonderful time of year. But, I’ll be darned if I am going to pause and worry before I let a “Merry Christmas” escape my lips.

On to Christmas TREES… no, they are not holiday trees. They just aren’t. Are there ANY holidays other than CHRISTMAS that invites the purchasing of a tree, trimming it with lights, and piling gifts around the bottom? Nope. Just Christmas… so can we just stick to calling it a freaking Christmas tree, please?

A little common sense goes a long way here.

I feel the same way you do. I have no problem with either Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas. But this whole “war on Christmas” thing is a farce. It’s just something republicans cooked up to get their “base” (ie. right wing Christians) good and riled up since Bush is slipping in the polls. The extreme political correctness of the 90’s are over and I haven’t seen anyone get riled up over the word Christmas in years.

While I typically try to steer away from political stuff on this blog (because there are just waaaaay too many political blogs out there) I have to say that there is probably more truth to your statement here than most people are comfortable admitting.

There is too much going on in the world to have arguments or problems with Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings.

In fact, if certain “groups” have so much time on their hands that they can waste it making public statements in the media over this sort of thing… then there are a whole bunch of people who can donate a LOT more time to a worthy cause like Habitat for Humanity – Hammer MORE… TALK LESS!

Completely agreed. True “Christmas” should lie in the actions and hearts of those who celebrate it, and not in a department store circular.
