Top Movies #5-1
In doing this, I have been reminded that there are a lot of movies that I really, really enjoy and it was very hard to narrow it down to just 20 (thus the honorable mentions here).
There are many movies I love but they wouldn’t be on this list because, while I have seen them numerous times, they don’t necessarily spring to mind instantly the moment I decide I might want to devote a couple of hours to a movie. Some of these would be:
Springtime in the Rockies - Betty Grable
The Changeling - George C. Scott, very intense!
Spinal Tap - hilarious.
It’s A Wonderful Life - although, I watch this at least once every December.
My Fair Lady - Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison
Yankee Doodle Dandy - James Cagney playing George M. Cohan.
The Bishop’s Wife - Cary Grant.
People Will Talk - Cary Grant
Once Upon A Honeymoon - Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers
And, there is one honorable mention I forgot, Jaws, I LOVE this movie. I’ve watched it probably 100+ times and it just never really gets old.
There are many, many more as well. But now it’s time to get to the final 5 and, of course, #1
#5 - White Christmas
This movie is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve been known to watch it in July. I love everything from the dance scene with Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing” to the end scene when it begins to snow and the cast sings “White Christmas.” This was supposed to be a sort of sequel to “Holiday Inn” starring Bing and Fred Astaire. Still, Rosemary Clooney is gorgeous and her voice is amazing, Vera Ellen is cute and the chemistry with Danny Kaye is adorable. And, who could forget the song, “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep.” There is nothing that gets me into the holiday mood more than this movie.
#4 - As Good As It Gets
Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear are just freakin’ awesome in this movie. It never fails if this one is on and I run across it, I end up watching it. There are so many funny and heartwarming moments.
#3 - The Philadelphia Story
This is the first Katherine Hepburn movie I saw. She was brilliant in this film and I always love she and Cary Grant playing off of each other (Bringing Up Baby is another favorite!). “Hello Dexter… Hello George” - one of my favorite scenes. And, I can’t forget James Stewart who was awesome! Or Virginia Weidler who played the obnoxious and very funny, younger sister to Kate Hepburn’s character, Dinah Lord. After watching this movie I decided right then and there that if I ever had a little girl I would name her Katherine.
#2 - Sleepy Hollow
I love this movie. I cannot say enough about it. Now, of course, I am starting to notice that I have a lot of the same people in the movies I’ve chosen. Johnny Depp was in Pirates, of course, but Michael Gambon who played Baltus Van Tassle was also the bad guy in Open Range. I remember catching the trailer for this movie months before it came out. I was beyond excited about it. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is probably my all-time favorite ghost story and while there have been other movie adaptations, none are as great (in my opinion) as the Disney animated version or this one by Tim Burton. In fact, just writing about it is really making me want to run in and pop it into the DVD player.
Which brings us to #1, #1 holds a very special place for me. Not only did my beloved Harry Connick Jr. do the entire soundtrack (which I wore out numerous cassettes of) but this movie got me through some really tough times. I can remember one night when I watched it over and over again end to end until the sun came up.
#1 - When Harry Met Sally This is one of the few movies that I know nearly every line of. Carrie Fisher is brilliant, “Everyone thinks they have good taste and sense of humor but we all can’t have good taste and a sense of humor.” Aside from the faking the orgasm scene, which seems to be at the forefront of most people’s memory of this film, there are so many wonderful scenes between Harry and Sally that are just great.
Harry Burns: You realize of course that we could never be friends.
Sally Albright: Why not?
Harry Burns: What I’m saying is - and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form - is that men and women can’t be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.
Sally Albright: That’s not true. I have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.
Harry Burns: No you don’t.
Sally Albright: Yes I do.
Harry Burns: No you don’t.
Sally Albright: Yes I do.
Harry Burns: You only think you do.
Sally Albright: You say I’m having sex with these men without my knowledge?
And, that’s it, my Top 20 favorite movies. Like them or not, I’m ok with either because I love them all.

I’m still waiting for my rating from there. I think the robot that scanned my blog fell asleep…
June 26, 2007 @ 4:25 am
And this post jumps you up to a hard “R”.
I just can’t see how crude or offensive you could be on your blog. You have the occasional use of profanity, but so does every person on Earth. You didn’t talk in depth about rooting around in your vagina with your husband, like our dear little Brittski, and you didn’t write about a dog licking peanut butter off of your vagina or ass, like me.
I mean, compared to Barney and Friends or Sesame Street, you’re crude and offensive. But compared to some of the stuff online? You’re a regular old fucking Dear Abby.
Somebody needs to gain a little perspective!
June 26, 2007 @ 5:14 am
You are purrrrfect just the way you are. And…. there is just the correct amount of pith and satire to help detract from the fact that you don’t use a lot of potty words :D . But PG? WTF? I figured you for at least PG-13 or R.
June 26, 2007 @ 5:45 am
I love your blog. That is exactly what it is…YOUR blog. A place for you to write your thoughts or whatever else you want to….no matter how crude they may be. (I do not find them crude or offensive for that matter)
I would think that it would have earned you more than a “PG” rating, however. Oh well.
June 26, 2007 @ 5:56 am
mine says I’m nc-17 what the hell is that , so what if I say fuck for fucks sake….. ghesh !
LOL oh well I guess they don’t like my choices of words LOL

June 26, 2007 @ 6:56 am
This just baffles me. I mean really. Some people can be so narrow and short sighted and up fucking tight.
I mean seriously Amy - if you had SEEN Prince in concert you would totally agree that it’s worth a little bootay if necessary.
June 26, 2007 @ 7:01 am
Britt, :lmao:
June 26, 2007 @ 7:08 am
I do my best not to be crude and offensive. I mean, I only talk about crotch twice a week.
June 26, 2007 @ 7:09 am
If you only discussed the weather and your health on your blog, *I* would be offended.
Don’t change a thing. We love it just the way it is. Although, you could stand to put a little more effort into trying to achieve that R rating. :)
June 26, 2007 @ 8:19 am
Who’s complained? You want I should kick their ass? Now see, that kind of gratuitous violence should get you at least a PG-13 rating.
June 26, 2007 @ 8:23 am
RW Nah, it’s probably just going through all of your archives to see if you ever actually caught up with Vincenzos.
Avi Dear Abby?!??! When have I EVER offered stupid advice? :omg:
ADW I know! I was hoping for at least a PG 13 - I feel like I’ve been robbed!!!
Angel Thank you very much!
Judy :lmao:
Miss B :twitchy: :lmao:
Mist 1 I guess I just need to show more discipline. Maybe I’ll only mention nipples once or twice a week.
y not i Thank you… Will do!
June 26, 2007 @ 8:25 am
Tense LOL - you must have commented as I was typing - sorry!!
Good point. Come to think of it, my PMS post should have put me up to a PG 13 - don’t you think? It talked a lot about violence.
June 26, 2007 @ 9:39 am
oh god, PLEASE do not talk about the weather! when I see more than like, one line on a blog about the weather, I have to grab a Red Bull to get me through the rest of the post! LOL
June 26, 2007 @ 9:40 am
Dear Abby was hot.
June 26, 2007 @ 10:01 am
Webmiztris I really can’t… we only have two seasons here - Hot and Fog. So… I would need a Red Bull just to get through a sentence!
Avi Prove it.
June 26, 2007 @ 10:57 am
Heh. When I did my rating, I only got an R rating. I’m gonna try harder to get the NC-17. :D
June 26, 2007 @ 12:16 pm
You are just the kind of person I probably need rubbing off on me. I am NC17. With out trying.
I will keep coming back hoping I can become a good person just like you!
June 26, 2007 @ 12:22 pm
I am pretty sure you managed to get past that rating by how… LOL Mine was NC17 and goddamn’d fuck crap I am gonna get past that!

Amy;
I just found your site, via poopandboogies and ohthejoy. Thanks for spreading the word about a dad in need.
Love your blog. I read your 100 list. Interestingly enough, I’ve written about my encounter with Amy Grant: http://shelookslikeme.wordpress.com/2007/04/05/quienes-mas-macho/
And, ditto “The Searchers” reference, except I have a little girl, so she’s Ella, not Ethan.
Also, regarding No. 51, have a friend who was college roommates with Molly Sims.
And, I used to live less than a mile from Stephen King, but I’ve never read his books.
Thanks again for the NYCWD message.

I can hardly stand reading your blog because your so nasty and profane. You could quite possibly ruin my reputation of sweetness, rainbows and butterflies because, as you know, we are judged by the company we keep.
If you just be nicer and less vulgar I could read your blog more but it’s not in my best interest to hang out with degenerates.
June 29, 2007 @ 3:46 pm
I find you very crude and offensive, thats why I keep coming back…lol just kidding.
Who wants to be a prissy blogger anyway? And say f**k instead of fuck. Baha.

We’re like….movie twins. I love, love WHMS. I bought a new copy the other day because mine was scratched. :heartbeat:

Finally! One we agree on. I love When Harry met Sally. It’s not quite as good as the porn version, When Harry Ate Sally Out, but it’s still one of my favorite films.

I’ve still never seen all of WHMS
But My Fair Lady actually is a “spring to mind favorite” for me!
September 28, 2007 @ 5:49 am
Ah, As Good As It Gets, yes I forgot that one. See? This all-time movie list is a real challenge.
Nice list. But remind me to have you over on Christmas some time - you must glow during that or something! Free lighting…
September 28, 2007 @ 6:21 am
White Christmas and Holiday Inn…yup, we definitely have to get together over the holidays and have a “girls movie weekend!”
I’ll bring the wine, of course!!
September 28, 2007 @ 8:25 am
KG - Isn’t it just the most awesome movie ever?
DB - That is probably one of my favorite pieces of conversation from that movie.
Avi - I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve watched it… the movie, not the porn version.
Miss B - My Fair Lady is awesome. I love Audrey Hepburn in that film, but I’ve been told that the Julie Andrews (who originated the role on Broadway) was even better.
RW - “Carol the waitress… Simon the fag.” That movie is just awesome.
And, yes, I am a bit of a Christmas freak, there are just a lot of happy, happy memories there.
Trish - Absolutely!!

Your number 1 is also my number 1 favorite movie… Geek and I enjoy messing with waiters by quoting, “Waiter, please to put more pepper on my paprikash.” We’re both pretty lame.
One disagreement I have with you — White Christmas should be #2. I watch it all year long and walk around singing, “Snow!” for days after.
September 28, 2007 @ 7:38 pm
Tense - Awwww, you guys are too cool! This list was soooo hard to do and I can see where if I were to go back now I’d probably rearrange a bunch of things. But, I agree with you, I can watch White Christmas any time of year and go around singing all the songs. Kate loves, “Mandy”
“hot buttered rum, light on the butter…” :coffee: :cheesy:
