Ghosts of Halloween Past…
Halloween has taken a turn for the worse and to be perfectly honest I want my boy back.
Oh for the days when Ethan dressed up. He was FUN and in the Halloween spirit. Now, I’m left with two girls and both are driving me batty.
Blech. Screw Halloween right up it’s little Jack O’ Lantern ass.
First we have the almost teenager, Kate.
She still has not forgiven me for the year she wanted to go as a “pretty Princess” and the boys (Ethan and GJ) were going as Knights. Putting a Halloween spin on things I painted them up to look like Ghosts/Corpses. They looked adorable in a very Halloween sort of way. Kate nearly threw a tantrum and to this day bitches at me for it.
I have a picture somewhere of her dressed in her little princess costume and ghostly make up with a decidedly pissed off look on her face. Wish I could find it…
This year she wanted to go as a 50’s teenybopper complete with poodle skirt. Oh yes, this is just soooo original. Know what I went as when I was her age? Madeline Usher… oh yes, the crazy sister of Edgar Allen Poe’s classic “Fall of the House of Usher.”
And yes, there was that ONE year when my mother was still making all the Halloween-related decisions and dressed me up as a Geisha, complete with face make up, my long hair twisted into a painfully authentic style, and a kimono.
Imagine, the mortification my mother, the Sunday school teacher, experienced when she found out what a Geisha really was. Bwahahahaha! Not that Geisha’s are prostitutes, but, it is a wide misconception that this is the case and naturally probably did not look so great for a Sunday school teacher to have dressed her daughter up as such.
While I have managed to steer Kate away from Poodle Skirt Hell, she is now committed to dressing up as a freakin’ genie… in pink no less. Gah. Pink satin outfit, pink sparkley flip flops, sequins, and pretty make up.
And somewhere the Grim Reaper is groaning in pain.
The younger daughter aka The Demon, the one that one might expect to be all “up in my grill” wanting to be a witch, or a devil, or SOMETHING Halloween-esque, wanted to be one of the following:

Someone shoot me. Now.
As I previously mentioned, we have now managed to get her to somewhat agree to dressing up as Ellen, of Edgar and Ellen.

Or so I thought.
I found the perfect striped, footie pajamas. The perfect wig (which I will have to put into pig tails and add bows, no big deal) and the PERFECT treat bucket. The treat bucket is none other than Edgar and Ellen’s pet, Pet.

The striped pajamas came in and Maggie screamed when she saw them.
I had to try them on her and she sobbed the entire time saying, “I can’t DO this annnnYYYYYMORE!! I can’t TAKE IT… someone HELP ME!!!!”
I brought the treat bucket home… she ran and hid under my desk.
I tried the wig on her… she sobbed hysterically.
And, I have to tell you that this costume could not BE more perfect.

This time, I’m putting my foot down. She’s going to wear this damn costume if it kills her and she’s going to damn well LIKE IT!!!!!

Umm…What’s wrong with a poodle skirt, may I ask? I have a couple of originals…(not that I ever wore them or anything)
Sheesh, don’t you hate it when children won’t bend to your will?

My daughter bought a too-expensive Princess costume for the granddaughter complete with flowing cape. But the 4 year-old is adamant about what she likes and doesn’t like. She will NOT wear the cape. Refuses utterly. She wants her slip-on sparkly fairy wings instead. So she’s officially going as a… I guess… fairy princess.
She reminds me and the Mrs of her mother somehow.

Emma is insisting that she is going as Dora.
Emma, however, does not have access to a Wal-Mart, and therefore will be utilizing one of the overpriced outfits we already own this year.
Which means, she’s going to be some kind of pretty princess. :-)

Yeah, I’m on Katie’s side with the costumes. You have to alternate the gory and grim with other types of costumes. My costume’s not gory, grim, macabre, or anything this year, but it’s still a great costume.
Oh, and just to be an ass, your apostrophe usage is going crazy today! :nana:

Excuse me..you also went as a genie in the 8th grade and I SAVED that outfit ALL THESE YEARS for Miss Katie.
I also remember the Fairy God Mother outfit for you, as well as the perfect witch outfit. I have the pictures of those horrible knights and poor “Dead” princess…she was PISSED! I also have the Geisha picture…we should share with your readers..don’t cha think??

Trish - I probably should have explained that this is VERY similar to a costume she wore the year before last. Honestly, I don’t have a problem with poodle skirts. It’s just been so overdone for Halloween.
RW - Sounds like the year I bought a too expensive, but very pretty witch costume for Kate and she screamed and hid in the other room.
Miss B - Well, at least she knows what she wants and you can probably find a costume to fit her. Not that I couldn’t find a Dora costume for Maggie, but seriously, do you KNOW how many freakin’ Doras there are going to be out there?
Avitable - I don’t think every year has to be grim or macabre. Last year Kate and Maggie went as Tinkerbell and Wendy… it was cute and different from what everyone else was doing. So, I suppose it’s not the macabre thing, it’s a semblance of originality.
And, yes, you are an ass.

Mom - Yes, by all means, I have NO problem showing pics, if I had found them, I would have.
And, yeah, I went as a genie ONE year. But Madeline Usher was classic… and YOU know it!!!

I just want to point out that the whole 50’s Bopper and Dora combination is a whole lot more wholesome than some of the other costumes I’ve seen out there which has given Halloween the alternative reputation of Skankoween.
I’d be grateful.

Mom -
NYCWD - I’d be grateful… except that anything remotely skank related isn’t something I would approve of or allow. My bigger complaint is that Kate’s costume ideas usually fall into the 50’s Bopper category and after several years of it, it gets OLD. :cheesy:

I miss the days when my children had no choice but to wear the costumes I picked out for them. I use to coordinate them. One year, we had a fisherman, a fish, and a mermaid; then we had a knight, a princess, and a dragon (which everyone kept calling a lizard, and pissing me off). But the best one was the year I made Delaney and Tristyn be Adam and Eve. I took swimsuits for each of them, and covered them with artificial leaves. (It was Arizona, so I didn’t have to worry about them being cold)
This year - , my suggestion of Dorothy, Tin man, and Lion have gone right out the window. Isn’t there somewhere in the parent/child contract that says mom’s choice of costume supersedes the child?
And mom - yes, we want pictures!!!
