Reliving My Youth…

I have just finished up some miscellaneous work stuff, my iPod happily blaring in my ears. What used to be filled with Frank Sinatra, Steve Tyrell, and my beloved Harry Connick is now accompanied by the sounds of my youth. Currently, Patrick Swayze, “She’s Like The Wind”

My daughter has brought back memories both good and bad. A local radio station plays 80’s hits in the evening and Kate, as it turns out, loves the stuff. On a fairly regular basis I get, “Hey Mom, give me another song!” And, off I will go trying to clear out the dustbunnies, cobwebs, and ghost of broken hearts past to find songs that Kate might like.

She’s so much like me - the me I could have been. She’s strong, sensitive, confident, and doesn’t let boys even remotely turn her on her ear. I was insecure about everything and if I had known what I know now back then I’d have had much more fun playing with boys. (ok, that came out sounding WRONG!) The point is, I got my heart broken more times than I care to recall. I’m sure I broke a few hearts myself though; if that email I received from my 7th grade boyfriend is any indication.

Somehow along the way I remembered a lot of good songs that remind me of happier times too. Then I went and fell in love with them all over again. (”Out of the Blue” - Debbie Gibson)

Any of these trigger any memories for you?

She’s Like The Wind

I’ve Had The Time of My Life

Hungry Eyes

Break My Stride

1-2-3

Lost In Emotion

Out of the Blue

Opposites Attract (am I the only one who remembers when Paula was cool AND talented?)

I Wanna Dance With Somebody (uh, yeah ditto Whitney on that one)

Please Don’t Go Girl (Yeah, I LOVED Jordan, what OF it, bitches?!?!?)

I’ll Be Loving You Forever (Ok, Joey was cute… but I liked the older guys)

Breakout

Take On Me

Footloose

Let’s Hear It For The Boy

Don’t Wanna Fall In Love

Bad Boys

Nasty Boys

Rhythm of the Night

Endless Summer Nights

Hold On To The Night - (that one is a super bittersweet for me)

St. Elmo’s Fire

Don’t Disturb This Groove

Manic Monday

The Power of Love

Stuck With You

Forever Your Girl

Straight Up

And I leave you with this… me humming and dancing wildly in front of my computer…

“Yeaaaaaaaah, I wanna dance with somebody… I wanna feel the HEAT with somebodyyyyyyyyy”

Uh, no, no video. Not gonna happen.

Ok I recognized about 3 of those songs. I was into a much more distorted music with an enormouse beat behind it, aka heavy metal, Led Zep, Ozzy, etc.

And yes, the playing with boys line did come out wrong. I do find it almost refreshing that you have such a good connection with your daughter. Good going, Mom.

As far as dancing around the kitchen totally embarrassing your kids songs, how about

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun”
“Material Girl”
“Centerfold”

and this one is even older but brings back very bittersweet memories from the roller skating place…

“Colour My World”

sigh

I just went back to the days of Barbie dolls and pretending there was a vampire under my bed.

I can remember most of those songs (NKOTB is now playing on my computer) and most the words to those songs.

OMG all of those songs bring back memories of my pre-teen years, dancing and singing them with my friends like the total geeks we were!

Now I’m 32, and I still dance and sing them with my friends like the total geeks we still are!

Where is Adam Ant? “Strip” and “Goody Two Shoes”? My friends and I all fought over which one of us was going to marry him. I read last year that he was wandering around a London park totally nude, and they put him in an asylum.

And I had completely forgotten about Lisa Lisa… I’ve got to go download “Lost in Emotion” now.

Okay, something like 90% of the songs mentioned here are on my “I gotta kick some ass and get back in shape” playlist for my ipod. I’m so stuck in time! Love your blog.
