Yes, I know I’m crazy
But, I have a hard time thinking I’m as off as someone might have me believe.
This is my house (shortly before we moved in) I would have taken a new picture but a nasty dust storm has blown in and I am not going outside. Ok, so picture:
See the three windows (with the oh-so-helpful red circle?) right in the middle above my front door?
That opens on to an entry that is open to the second story ceiling. A lot of heat (during the summer) comes through those three windows. Lots of options (even inexpensive options) are available to handle this issue.
Yet, someone (who shall remain nameless to protect his/her anonymity) suggested painting a panel (perhaps cardboard?) and using a stick to put them up there in the windows.
When I objected (probably with a more horrified and offended look than I should have used) to this suggestion, I was told that no one else cares what I have in my windows, that no one else (other than myself) pays that much attention to other houses.
So, I ask you:
Do you pay attention to other houses and what things the owners may or may not have done to them or am I just strange?
How would you feel about having some sort of home made panel put in your windows that face the street?
And, yes, in case you are wondering, we DO have an extension ladder.

You could get up on that roof and have a pretty good sniper post…

I’ve never seen a full picture of the front of your house before. I love it.
a) If Jared mentioned “cardboard” as a solution for anything besides “how do we build a fort?” - I would flip my shit.
b) Of course you notice what other people do in their houses. That’s how you get ideas on what to do (or not do) in your own.

Ok I am pretty much a redneck..so maybe my vote won’t count.
But…I don’t think it’s such a bad idea. If you painted a panel to put up there I don’t think it would be that noticable from the outside. Will it show on the inside? that would bother me more…
You could also get some heavy duty drapes to put up there. Putting them up might be a trick I guess.
Anything that would keep the dreaded heat out of my house and keep my a/c bill down would be ok with me. :)

I don’t think it would necessarily be noticeable, but one thing to realize is that it won’t do any good. Once the heat has passed through the glass, it’s in your house, and the only way to offset that is to install window tint on the glass itself. That will reflect most of the heat before it enters the house and make a huge difference.

Yes, I notice things like that. I think it is a woman thing. And no, I would not want cardboard in my windows, even painted.

I’m thinking painted cardboard maybe wouldn’t be as bad as aluminum foil but might be better than a sheet of some kind sorta kinda hanging in there ( Things I have seen around my neck of the woods). I’d go with the sniper post as well. The neighbors would love ya.
Nice house. Did you draw the Circle? I did find it quite helpful.

Maybe I’m paranoid but whenever I see cardboard used in any window I think of nefarious types saying “hey look, they’re trying to keep stuff out with cardboard! This must be an easy house to break into!”
Of course people pay attention to what other people do with their houses. It is called one of two things, “getting inspriation” and “oh my god you will never guess what the neighbors have done now.”
Super gorgeous house btw!

:peeved:
I would flip if my husband suggested cardboard. Cheap ass curtains from walmart and a suspension rod would work perfect to start blocking light and rays from coming in, all for a grand total of $30.

You are not the only one to notice what other people do to their houses or have in their windows. Cardboard would only be a solution if he is willing to paint a beautiful stain glass mural on the cardboard.
Something like this
http://www.etchedclingdecals.com/
would be an inexpensive nice looking solution. Look at the privacy films and the stain glass look. Both would be great for helping to keep out the heat, and keeping up with the look of the home and neighborhood.
Remind Mr. Anonymous that it is not a matter of “keeping up with the Jones’” It is a matter of home pride, and home value.

I have to admit that I like Avitable’s idea the best!

what a nice looking house!! YEs I am always looking at the neighbors homes, esp when we’re house hunting

If the window wasn’t facing the street, I’d say tinfoil that bitch up. But since it is - yes, people do notice your windows. When I see people with windows cardboarded or foiled up, I assume that they are drug dealers and that room is where they make the goods.

Of course I notice other houses. In the summer nothing is more fun than driving around just as it gets dark and looking in other people’s windows. They haven’t shut the blinds yet, and the lights are on inside.. you get to be a drive by peeping tom.
