Comfort Foods

I love to try almost anything. I’ve eaten chocolate covered ants from Hot Lix - yes, they are good. Actually, they taste like chocolate covered rice krispies. I haven’t tried the grasshoppers or scorpions, yet. I’m not incredibly picky, although I hate raw onions and on the rare occasions that I go to McDonald’s I always order my burgers without onions.

These are just a few of my top favorites, I can’t eat like this a lot. Most of the time we shoot for 35g of fiber a day and try to keep to a low carb diet. Ok, so ten of my favorite things to eat not listed in any particular order:

1. Tuna sandwiches on whole wheat bread. The tuna is made with sweet pickles and mayo only. I like them with potato chips and a big glass of ice cold milk. Although, it took me a couple of months to get past this incident.

2. Leftover turkey sandwiches. Turkey is not just for Thanksgiving or Christmas. My husband makes whole, huge turkeys all year round. Usually he smokes them with a variety of woods and they are absolutely amazing! My favorite version of this sandwich is on a fresh croissant spread with cranberry sauce (I make my own from scratch) and cream cheese, than layered heavily with turkey. It’s amazing.

3. Boneless buffalo wings - the hotter and tangier, the better! We make them at home a lot and I love them with Bleu Cheese dressing and celery sticks.

4. Cranberry sauce - yeah, that sounds strange. But, I make my own and it smells the house up beautifully AND it’s nearly a dessert. It’s been suggested that I make some sort of dessert that this can be spooned over. I’ve made it with Splenda too and it’s still good!

5. Biscuits and gravy with eggs and bacon or chicken fried steak. It’s a rarity that I actually make it or order it, but it takes me back to breakfasts with my grandparents. And, I admit, I make kick-ass biscuits from scratch.

6. Coffee, coffee, coffee. Black, with Splenda, with Splenda and cream - anyway I can get it. It’s not just the caffeine zing, I absolutely love the taste and I love the feel of a big warm mug in my hands on a cold morning. The bolder the flavor the better.

7. Teriyaki smoked salmon. Mike makes it and it’s AWESOME. Plus it’s a favorite that I can eat all the time.

8. Breakfast pastries - I am a pastry FREAK. Really good cinnamon rolls, honey buns, those great packaged pastries with the different flavors of jam in the center - OMG. And, crepes, I LOVE crepes.

9. Chocolate - I’m super picky about my chocolate. I’m not a big fan of Hershey’s (with the exception of Cadbury Eggs) or Godiva, or Ghiradelli. But, I’ll settle for Ghiradelli if I have to. I love the Ritter Sports bars with hazelnuts. If I am buying chocolate I’ll buy it at Trader Joe’s or World Market.

10. Shortbread. Seriously… OMG. Shortbread and milk. Chocolate covered is even better.

Looking at this list, I don’t know how in the hell you ever stick to a low carb diet.

I need to get Jared to whip out the turkey fryer.

You and have almost no comfort foods in common!

Why does this current design make you click “Read More” for every post? I hate that.

Your tuna link is a no go.
I’d tell you how they made the gravy for biscuits and Gravy at a favorite local truck stop that I believe is history now that I worked at briefly, but it would pretty much destroy your appetite.
Mayo and pickles alone in Tuna would never fly at the Beamer household. At our house there is probably a good ten ingredients that go into our tuna sandwich, and it is awesome. :groovy: :cheer: :heartbeat:

Oh, salmon. The one thing I really miss about living in Montana was that family friends would hop an AF transport to Alaska, go fishing, and we’d have fresh caught salmon for supper that very night.

I’ve only recently begun liking turkey, my family just put up with it and made a ham for me and my brother on holidays that were traditionally turkey.

Have you tried sweet corn bread and milk? We would crumble up the leftover corn bread in a glass, pour milk over it like cereal, and eat it with a spoon. Very good.

I am With. You. on the Turkey. It is one of my absolute favorite foods in the whole world. I’m also a big fan of the breakfast pastries and the chocolate (though I am not picky about mine at all). The only thing I’m not really with you on is the seafood (particularly the tuna–I have a dangerous tuna aversion)… I have an aquatic life embargo on my stomach. :) But the turkey goodness? I am so there!

I’m loving the food and drink themed posts of yours lately. Of course, now I’m hungry. The turkey sounds delish and I’m totally with you on the breakfast pastries and chocolate. YUM :heartbeat:

Miss Britt: Obviously there is a difference between what I like to eat and what I can eat. Which is probably why I call this my comfort food list. :sly:
We’ve been deep frying turkeys for years but have laid off the past few because it was such a mess.

    Avitable:
Beamer: Oh, I bet it wouldn’t surprise me one bit. And, your tuna sounds like Mike’s everything but the kitchen sink. Ugh. :smack:

Marissa: My grandma was from Oklahoma… I ate a lot of cornbread and milk. My grandpa preferred cornbread and buttermilk.

Tense Teacher: Want my recipe? I’ll totally share!

Erin says: *sigh* Turkey is just so gooooood.

    J.O.: YES! It’s AWESOME, isn’t it?

Lisa: Awww, thanks. It didn’t make the list, but I am also a huge fan of roasted brussel sprouts with prosciutto and parmesan cheese.

You homemade cranberry sauce, hot off the oven, spooned over vanilla ice cream, preferrably also homemade! Now THAT would be good! Maybe with a little granola crumble to top it off.
