Collecting Saws?

Remember good, old school, horror movies? You know, the type of movie where the bad guy gets it in the end or at least looks like he has gotten it in the end? Sure Friday the 13th spawned 9 million sequels but you always knew that somehow Jason was going to get it. Personally, I never watched any of them because I thought it was pretty hokey to finally bring Jason back after his mommy was the crackhead murderer in the first movie, but that’s beside the point.
Or Halloween? The sequels (minus Season of the Witch, obviously) were far better than the sequels to the Friday 13 movies, but again, ol’ Mikey Meyers got it in the end, right? Heck, even stick-up-her-ass Jamie Lee Curtis came back for that last one to put an end to her pain in the ass, psycho, nuttier than a Christmas fruitcake brother!
Nightmare on Elm Street, again, sure it might have taken a few sequels and one absolutely ridiculous hook up with Jason Voorhees but in the end Freddie got his just desserts.
So what the hell is up with this trend in horror movies where the bad guy wins? Not to mention the sheer grossness and hacker slasher garbage where they are constantly trying to make you puke rather than scare the hell out of you (ala The Exorcist)?
Mainly, I’m thinking of this new film that is out, The Collector. Sure, I read the spoiler (spoiler alert, duh) because that’s what I do with certain films. Don’t judge! This one promised that it was a new twist to the horror movie genre but it’s from the creators of Saw, so what does that tell you? It’s like M. Night Shyamalan saying he’s now going to put a twist on surprise endings!
The bad guy wins. It’s ridiculous. It’s a cheap guarantee for a sequel. More importantly, in my opinion, the point of the horror genre is to take people to the edge and then bring them back safely. There is enough garbage, negativity, and chaos in this world that it’s just one more rock in the universal dirt sandwich to allow the bad guy to get away.
We aren’t talking about Point Break here (shut up, do not judge! I love Keanu and Patrick Swayze, thank you!) – this is torture, murder, mayhem and disgusting ickiness that ends on a horrifically negative note. Who needs that? But, just like Saw it has it’s fans and it will make money at the box office, undoubtedly. And, that’s totally cool, but my money won’t contribute, that’s for sure.
Ooo, look at me I almost look like Preachy McPreacherson or something! Eeek!!!! Not meant that way, I don’t believe that these movies should be restricted in any way, just saying that I have no intention of throwing my hard earned dollar into that blood pool!
If you happen to have lived under a rock or missed all the hype and hoopla – the movie is about a dude who breaks into a house to rob it and finds out that another psycho-pants-asshat has already broken in and rigged the house up to be one gigantic torture chamber while holding the family hostage in the basement. It’s every mother’s worst nightmare!
There have been a couple of home invasions in our general area (not our specific neighborhood) and my neighbor got a little freaked and they installed an alarm system. Home Security Monitoring – Home Security Family offers home security systems for free when signing up for an ADT security monitoring system. $100 rebate – and I know with our homeowners insurance that you get a nice discount when you install a security system. Anywhoooo…
When you live in a neighborhood where construction is on-going (ours is *this* close to being finished, finally – the neighborhood, that is) guaranteed there are going to be some sticky fingers running around.
When we first moved in there were surveillance cameras that kept an eye on all the construction areas and there were security guards that drove through all night long. When the the bottom fell out of the market the first thing to go was all the security.
There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t end up with cards, flyers, etc. in my mailbox or on my front door from home security companies. I actually have that sign sitting in my front window now.
My point? Good grief, we are saturated with threats on our safety nonstop, so I find it annoying that film makers actually expect people to pay the price of a movie ticket to have an ending that is less than “the good guy wins.” Sure, that kind of thing goes on with dramas. Titanic had a pretty obvious ending and yet, was a damn good movie, sad, depressing even, but good.
To me there is just a line at horror movies where if you are going to maim, dismember, and decapitate, at the end of it the bad guy should at least appear to have finally gotten his just desserts.

I like to watch a good scary movie and I do not like it if the bad guy doesn’t get his! Even if it’s not a scary movie. Maybe this sounds silly, but when I spend money to see a movie, I want to feel vindicated when it’s over.
I will admit to liking the first Saw movie.
I love, love, LOVE horror movies. I love being scared and needing to check under my bed at night. What I don’t love is being grossed out by a movie. I can appreciate gore, but to an extent. If a movie is all gore and no story or suspense, I have no interest in it.
I’m positive that this “Collector” movie will not be a part of my collection.
Well, I don’t know if that’s going to work for me, but definitely worked for you!
Excellent post!
