On To The Weekend
Posted By AmyD. on January 30, 2009
I know most people have had it up to “here” with cold, snow and storms. I’m not looking forward to the heat this summer, but I am looking forward to spring, sunshine, and getting outside to do some gardening when my fingers don’t go numb or ache from the cold. Although we don’t have snow here, the cold is getting boring and the gray days are nearly depressing.
Today, for example, it’s going to be 52 with hazy sunshine. That doesn’t sound bad, except the weather here really is a lot better when it’s 65 or even 70 with sunshine and clear skies. The haze is really ucky and makes for a dreary day even with the sunshine.
I’m picky, I want sunshine, not hazy sunshine. Dammit! My cup of gratitude runneth under. Severely.
Which means that my thoughts turn indoors and even though it isn’t spring yet, spring cleaning definitely comes to mind. I’ve been trying to work my way through my house cleaning and clearing out, organizing and reorganizing. I’ve even broken down and purchased organization-type gadgets and things. I found this article recently and it’s provided loads of inspiration. Plus I’ll have something fun to do while the rest of the planet (or so it feels like) is engrossed in that famous game on Sunday.
I do not like football, Sam-I-Am, no, I do not like football at all. Oddly enough, one day a year I become allergic to buffalo wings and tailgate fare, I break out in rashes and bald spots, that day would be SuperFoul Sunday. No, I will not get my feelings hurt if you don’t invite me to your ultra fabulous SuperFoul party. Not a bit, in fact, I view not inviting me as your respecting my dislike for the event. Really, I do.
But, I digress…
It’s funny the way my mind works in terms of seasons. I’m seasonal. I really am. I like to be outdoors in the spring, at the beach when it’s too hot and miserable here, outdoors in the fall (it’s like a reverse spring here) and snuggled up in the winter. I change things around the house depending on the season and I’ve come to realize that while most people say we only have two seasons here, “hot and fog”, I think our shifts are just more subtle and you have to pay close attention to appreciate them.
Right now my backyard looks miserable. To the casual observer it appears sad and looks almost dead. But, I know it’s only sleeping. The plants are waiting for the ground to warm up before they start peeking through the dirt with their spring and summer gorgeousness. Sure, I could be a green thumb fanatic with something growing and blooming all year round, but there is something beautiful and organic to a yard that is almost skeletal and bare when it is cold outside.
Plus, a bare and skeletal yard needs very little maintenance when it is too cold to be outside anyway.
I’ll be honest, I’m a little worried that my pineapple sage might not spring back to life. I don’t know what I’ll do with out it, it’s one of my favorite plants and I’m willing to bet I won’t find it again at any local nursery. It’s the greatest plant with pretty red flowers, it has culinary uses but I love that it smells amazing and attracts loads of humming birds to the yard.
I do love those little, short attention spanned, birds. They must be the hardest working little guys in the entire birdie kingdom.

Hello Amy! I have to stop by and let you know that I gave you an award on my bloggy blog
Really. It’s part of the rules!
PS- my backyard looks dead too.
Hey!! Thank you very much!
Yeah, my backyard looks so bad that I won’t be posting pics of anything in it for a few more months. LOL
Years ago when I was still living at home my parents had hummingbird feeders. Every day after work my dad would sit out on the porch to watch them. Then one day he was wearing a red cap and one flew right up to his cap and just stayed there for a few seconds. After it flew off he just started laughing the biggest deep down belly laugh. After that he tried to get one to come back up to him but they never did. But, I enjoyed those evenings with him while he waited.
Thanks for spurring that memory this morning. I really needed it.

Awwww. I love humming birds. We have a happy little guy who hang out in our backyard and sits on the patio watching us eat dinner during the summer. They really are pretty social little things.
Okay…if we ever meet in person, you are going to get a neck-wringing (a gentle one) for complaining :uhuh: about 52 degrees and hazy sunny. Really. Just hop on weather.com and check out the weather here in Indiana. Snow. Ice. Below freezing temperatures. You’re worrying about your backyard – I can’t even see my backyard. I’m just saying. :blam:
As far as the SuperBowl goes, I admit it: I watch it for the commercials. I go to SuperBowl parties for the food and the gambling. Finally, I would like to say that I KNOW I wrote a comment for the haunted house post below, but it’s not there now! Where did it go? Creepy!!!

ok, ok, I totally hear you. BUT! I had a friend move here from Illinois… he used to make fun of me for saying stuff like that. Then he had his first winter here. As he put it, “You aren’t kidding, this is a different kind of cold, give me the snow, this stuff sinks into your bones and you can’t get rid of it!” It’s true, too. And, 52, is mild, I know. But, we do hit much colder temps and like my old friend put it, it’s a different kind of cold. Bone chilling.
:nyah:
I’m sorry…but there is absolutely NOTHING bone-chilling about California. Bone-chilling was the week we had here when the temp was like 10 and the wind was blowing, which made it about 2. All week.
But I’m sure you’re suffering in your spoiled “California girl” kind of way! (laugh)
Goofy!

Did I mention I live in the arm pit of California? Our weather here is not typical
California weather. I wish… but it isn’t.
And, don’t forget we do have Mammoth and Lake Tahoe – where there is usually snow all year round. We do get bone chilling, honest! :halo:
I’m with you on the “SuperFoul” party. We were invited to one and I have to tell you, neither hubby or I am at all interested in sports and could care less about some stupid party to celebrate such a thing.
I’m looking forward to spring too, but I am not a green-thumb kind of gal so I am liking that everything is sleeping right now.

It’s a rare thing to find another couple who aren’t all engrossed and wrapped up in football.
My backyard is in the dead and dull stage now too, same with my front. I love it in the spring when everything bounces back and becomes beautiful again. Then I’ll have the summer battle of trying to keep everything alive in the heat, and a beautiful fall. But I still can’t wait for spring!
And I’ve seen the pictures of your yard – its beautiful when its in bloom!
Aww, thanks!! We have the same heat issue here, but I don’t think it’s quite as extreme as yours. High triple digits… a lot. I’m planting more rosemary this year because it’s drought tolerant and stays green all winter.
Travis and I don’t do anything football related, ever. And, seeing as how we live in a football dominated state (WI), we get made fun of, a lot. Oh well. So, definitely no SuperFoul party invites for us!!
And, what is pineapple sage? Never heard of it. I suppose I could always google it, but that’s so time consuming…hahaha.

Yeah, Mike gets teased about it too. Pretty bad, I think it’s worse if you are a guy who doesn’t like sports.
Pineapple sage is an herb, it has dark green sage shaped leaves but has this gorgeous pineapple scent to it. Then it blooms these really pretty red flowers that look a lot like salvia blooms. I might have pics of it… I’ll check.
We only watch the SuperFoul because Sweety bets on it and I want to see if I can squeeze money out of him when it’s done. I’m bad like that.
Thankfully, he isn’t a football nut sort of guy.
