Our Song

Posted By on July 24, 2009

Last Thursday Kate and I decided it was time for a mother daughter outing. I figured I’d get my work done and we’d head out for a pedicure and manicure followed up with something Starbuck’s related and finishing with my hair appointment around 1:30.

We went to a local nail salon where we listened to people speak in a foreign language and silently prayed that we were not being laughed at while pretending to be interested in whatever was being blown out of proportion on one of those all news television channels.

Then we ran by Starbuck’s. On the way to the nail salon we sang along to Amy Grant’s “She Colors My Day.” But, on the way to Starbuck’s Kate leaned over to the iPod and said, “I love ‘She Colors My Day’ mom, but that’s more Maggie’s song. Here’s our song.”

And it was. My ringtone for her and the song she hears as a ringback tone whenever she calls me. It wasn’t completely intentional on my part. From the moment she was born and I had my very first baby girl this song was constantly in my head. To me, it embodies the way I feel about my first daughter.

Baby, Baby – by Amy Grant

Baby, baby
I’m taken with the notion
To love you with the sweetest of devotion.

Baby, baby
My tender love will flow from
The bluest sky to the deepest ocean.

Stop for a minute
Baby, I’m so glad you’re mine, yeah
You’re mine.

Baby, baby
The stars are shining for you
And just like me I’m sure that they adore you.

Baby, baby
Go walking through the forest
The birds above a singing you a chorus.

Stop for a minute
Baby, they’re so glad you’re mine, oh yeah
And ever since the day you put my heart in motion
Baby I realize that there’s just no getting over you.

Baby, baby
In any kind of weather
I’m here for you always and forever.

Baby, baby
No muscle man could sever
My love for you is true and it will never

Stop for a minute
Baby, I’m so glad you’re mine
And ever since the day you put my heart in motion
Baby I realize that there’s just no getting over you.

And ever since the day you put my heart in motion
Baby I realize that there’s just no getting over you.
Over you.

Baby, baby
Always and forever
Baby I’m so glad that
Here for you baby
So glad you’re mine
Baby I’m so glad that
When I think about you it makes me smile
Baby, baby be mine
Baby I’m so glad that
Don’t stop giving love
Don’t stop, no
Baby I’m so glad that you’re mine
Baby I’m so glad
Baby I’m so glad that
When I think about you it makes me smile

And, of course, if you know any Amy Grant info at all, you know that this song was written for her daughter, Millie. I sang this song to Kate constantly from the moment she was born. To my great delight she connects this song to me as well. So you can probably imagine how moved I was when she switched the iPod to “our song” and we both belted it out with pure, unadulterated joy.

Just one of those moments that makes me appreciate being a mom, but most importantly being the mother to these kids. They are awesome and I’m so grateful any time I get the opportunity to take a breath and really revel in it.
