Top Movies #10-6

Posted By on September 27, 2007

This is terrible the further I get into this series the more I begin to think I should have something a bit more profound to say about each film. Unfortunately, the same can go for all of them, I like what I like because I like it, it entertains me, most make me feel good or “up” after watching them. They remind me of special times, people, and places. There are very few movies that could ever leave this list. In fact, some of them, at some point, I am sure I will get bored of and wish I hadn’t even listed them. Very few will stand the test of my time, I suppose. But at this given moment, this is the list.

#10 – Pirates of the Caribbean
I loved this movie, I loved everyone in it and of course, Johnny Depp was amazing. Although, I have to admit to not being incredibly fond of the sequels. I just didn’t like them. I was skeptical when I first heard about a movie being based on the ride but after seeing it, I can’t imagine a better way to bring the ride at Disneyland to life. And as awesome as Pirates was is how craptacular I thought Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy was. What a disappointment there!

#9 – Something To Talk About
First off, it has a nut shot and we all know how much I love a good nut shot. Kyra Sedgewick kneeing Dennis Quaid is hysterical. Gena Rowlands locking Robert Duvall out of the house is just brilliant. The women in this movie are just such great characters.

#8 – Open Range

This movie has it all, the scenes are strong and gorgeous, Michael Jeter (in one of his last films) is just great. The dog gets shot – and that really bothers me, a lot. But, beyond that, it’s strong, heartfelt, romantic, and has a wonderful ass-kicking climax and a wonderful, sweet ending. I hadn’t seen this one for a while and a few weekends ago on a Sunday morning, Mike and I were in bed and flipped to a channel that was airing it. I had forgotten how wonderful this film is. Of course, happily snuggled up while watching it definitely adds to the charm.

#7 – Signs

This is another one of those movies that no matter how many times I’ve seen it, I get sucked into it. Although, again, it really bothers me that the dog has to get it. The first time I saw it, Mike and I rented it while the kids were gone with my mom for the night. We blacked out the house and curled up in bed, I think there were moments when both of us were peeking through our fingers at the screen.

#6 – Disney’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
Narrated by Bing Crosby. We watch this one every Halloween and I have to admit I’ve already watched it about 10 times this month alone. Originally released in 1949 as “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr.Toad” it was an animated film that told two different stories. The first half was the animated version of part of “The Wind in the Willows” with Basil Rathbone narrating. It’s nice, Maggie likes it, but the real treat is the second half with Bing Crosby narrating the classic Washington Irving tale. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was released in 1959 as a stand alone feature. Disney, in all of its wisdom (insert snarky cough here) has only released the original on DVD, so now to get to Sleepy Hollow one must go through the chapter selections to Chapter 14. My real bitch with this is that Sleepy Hollow is undoubtedly a Halloween movie, and yet, The Adventures of Mr. Toad takes place at Christmas and New Year’s. Gah! No mixing of holidays!!!

Again – only seen one. But oohhhhhhh the Johnny goodness in that one film is enough.

Ya know, I’m sure my “top whatever” list wouldn’t be “profound” either. It would mostly include insightful observations like “OMG I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!”

  2. RW says:

Wow. I’m completely stumped. haven’t seen a one of these. I gotta get out more…

  3. avitable says:

Well, I’ve seen two of these, and neither would be in my top 1,0000 movies.

I don’t think my choices would be profound, either. Well, not as profound as RW’s. I still need to try to make my list, though, and that will be difficult. I don’t even know where to start!

  4. Amy says:

Miss B – I’m seriously shocked that you haven’t seen Something To Talk About – Julia Roberts, Dennis Quaid? REALLY? I mean, it’s like a far happier, brassier, sassier Steele Magnolias. Only happy… (did I mentioned happy?) I mean, yeah, it has it’s moments, but, no one DIES.

RW – See, I thought for SURE that you had seen Open Range. It’s not as gritty as Unforgiven, but it’s awesome and Robert Duvall is just amazing.

Avitable – It’s not necessarily that my choices aren’t profound, it’s more like, I don’t have anything profound to say about them like RW did.

All great movies. Although there is something wrong I like Open Range, which says a lot because I am skeptical of any new western, but it’s not in my collection. Something to talk about, sooo watching that movie later. Sweet.
